Two Nervous Cell Types

The Nervous Tissue makes up different parts of the Nervous System, there are several main components of the system and most are made up of nervous tissue. Nervous tissue is the communication network of the body. There are two types of nervous cells; Neurons and Neuroglia (supporting cells).

  • Neurons- Neurons, nerve cells that are the basic building blocks of the nervous system, are specialized to carry "messages" through an electrochemical process. The nucleus of a neuron contains genetic information which is surrounded by a membrane that protects the cell.
  • Neuroglia-
A class of cells in the brain and spinal cord that form a supporting structure for the neurons and provide them with insulation. It is the supporting cells that belong in the central nervous system consisting of astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglia (known as glia). These cells that form myelin, protect, support, and maintain equilibrium in your nervous system are called glial cells (neuroglia).
