The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and all of the nerves that connect these organs with the rest of the body. Together, these organs are responsible for the control of the body and communication among its parts.

                   1. Brain

  • The human brain is the main organ of the human nervous system. The brain, along with the spinal cord and network of nerves, controls information flow throughout the body, actions such as walking, reading, and talking, and involuntary reactions such as breathing and digestion.  The central nervous system is made of the brain.

          2. Spinal Cord

  • The spinal cord is the most important structure between the body and the brain. It is a vital link between the brain and the body, and from the body to the brain. The spinal cord is a cylindrical structure of nervous tissue composed of white and gray matter. The central nervous system is made of the spinal cord.

         3. Nerves

  • The nerves are one or more bundles of fibers forming part of a system that conveys impulses of sensation and motion between the brain or spinal cord and other parts of the body. Nerves carry electrochemical signals to and from different areas of the nervous system as well as between the nervous system and other tissues and organs.

4. Five Sense Organs

  • There are five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. There are organs connected with these sense that take in information that is sent to the brain so that the body can act on it.
  1. Sight- The eye is the organ of the sense of sight. Eyes detect light, and convert it to electro-chemical impulses in neurons.
  2. Hearing-  The ear is the organ concerned with hearing. The ear has three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear.
  3. Taste-  The tongue is vital in tasting and chewing food and in speech.
  4. Smell-  The nose, along with the mouth, lets air in and out of the body. It also helps us distinguish different smells in that air.
  5. Touch-  The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.

  Brain Facts

  • Lack of oxygen in the brain for 5 to 10 minutes can lead to permanent brain damage.
  • New brain connections are created every time you form a memory.
  • Your brain uses 20% of the total oxygen and blood in your body.
  • There's a virus that attacks human DNA making people less intelligent, impairing brain activity, learning and memory.
  • When awake, the human brain produces enough electricity to power a small light bulb.
  • Forgetting is good for the brain: deleting unnecessary information helps the nervous system retain it's plasticity.
